Home Movie Day Athens
Home Movie Day is a global celebration dedicated to amateur films—more commonly known as home movies—and to personal audiovisual memories.
It was launched in 2002 by film archivists as a side project of the Center for Home Movies (U.S.) and takes place every year in dozens of cities around the world, with the aim of highlighting the importance of home movies as social and historical documents.
From Super 8 films forgotten in boxes to old videotapes (VHS) and early digital formats from the 1990s, Home Movie Day invites us to revisit images of everyday life, moments from personal and family celebrations (weddings, baptisms, gatherings, etc.), trips, and little stories of life—from our first steps to our last day of school.
As an invaluable cultural legacy, amateur films—which capture who we were, how we lived, and, ultimately, how much we have changed—offer an important window into a life that has passed irrevocably and shed light on what is worth preserving from it.
Home Movie Day is based on a simple yet meaningful idea: each person’s personal archive is part of a society’s broader cultural history and, therefore, concerns all of us. These films open up small parentheses in an often rigid and already established historical narrative. They invite us to break it down and reframe it through the often-overlooked individual experience.
As part of this international project, Home Movie Day is coming to Athens for the first time, thanks to the volunteer initiative of a small group of film and archival professionals, who came together with the goal of creating an open space for communication among the public, filmmakers, and anyone who wants to share their personal moments.
Each Home Movie Day event highlights the history of the place where it is held. In Athens, where archival records of daily life have gaps over time, the first event may bring to light a valuable audiovisual treasure from the city’s modern history.
On October 31, 2026, Home Movie Day Athens finds its ideal “home” at KET in Kypseli.
How to Take Part in Home Movie Day Athens
Look for those home movies you thought you’d lost forever or that you haven’t seen in years. They’re in your home or your parents’ home; no matter how much you think they’re lost, they’re right there in front of you.
Select up to 10 minutes from the footage you’d like to share. Let the Home Movie Day team know what format you have it in. If it hasn’t been digitized, the team will explore how it can be screened, with the invaluable collaboration of Unmade Films and Yannis Kolozis.
Register by emailing info@homemovieday.gr by September 30 so that your home movie can be officially included in the program.
What Will Happen on October 31 at KET
At Home Movie Day Athens, we’ll be bringing our home movies. There will be a pre-made list, but you can also sign up on the day of the event.
We’ll watch your home movie together. If you’d like, you can tell a story related to the footage we’re watching or talk about the place and time when it was filmed. The audience can ask questions. And here’s something important: nothing is mandatory, except for the emotion, the laughter, and the excitement over something you otherwise would never have seen or shared.
The evening’s program will consist of home movies shared by anyone who chooses to participate. Unexpected excerpts from the “Great Book of Home Movies” will also be screened, followed by an open discussion on the significance of personal documentation as one of the most important forms of intergenerational archiving, at a time when we are turning back to our shared analog past.
