\u201cThis burden… I don’t feel well… Nothing…\u201d<\/p>\n

It is probably impossible to include so many complaints in just one play. But Uncle Vanya is a charming play. How can poetry exist among all these complaints?<\/p>\n

All the characters of the play carry a burden. As Nietzsche says, “we cannot suffer without making someone pay for it”. What do the characters of the play do with all that suffering?<\/p>\n

And what type of characters are they? No woman character is a “heroine”, meaning she is not as feminine or as motherly as she should, and no male character is as masculine as he should so as to be called a “hero”. Uncle Vanya himself fails completely as a male protagonist. Even in the title he is referred merely as an “uncle”.<\/p>\n

In this play:<\/p>\n

Nobody sleeps as musch as he would like.<\/p>\n

Nobody loves as much as they should.<\/p>\n

Nobody takes any chances.<\/p>\n

Nobody is being loved as much as they need to.<\/p>\n

Everybody wants to feel more.<\/p>\n

Everybody is ready for a fight.<\/p>\n

Everybody repeats himself.<\/p>\n

Some drink more than they should.<\/p>\n

Some see work as therapy.<\/p>\n

Some live their life as a drama.<\/p>\n

In the end nothing changes.<\/p>\n
